If your toddler is growing so fast and tall at the same time, considering how expensive baby stuff have become, you would need to think about getting your hands dirty for once and building a bed that he will until his teenage days and beyond.

Let’s have a look at how easy it is to make a 27 ½” x 51 ½” – can fit a crib mattress.

What you need:

1. Wood – in accurate measurements as follows:
2- 2×2 @ 8 feet long
1-1×6 @ 8 feet long
1-1×6 @ 10 feet long
5-1×3 @ 8 feet long
2-1×2 @ 8 feet long
1 beadboard wainscoting – lowes.com has the best quality
2. Nails – 1” finish nails
3. 2” inch screws and 1-1/4” pocket hole screws
4. Wood adhesive
5. Wood grout
6. 120 grit sandpaper

Tools

1. Measuring tape

5. Driller

Overall Instructions:

– Predrill holes before attaching with screws always

How to cut your wood

Instructions:

1. On a legal sized paper create a pattern with the shape you want for the header. Trace that pattern on the front and back of the header so they are identical.
2. With the 1×6 boards, using a jigsaw, cut out the header following the shape you drew and traced on your board. Follow the cutting by sanding until all the ends are well smoothed out.
3. With the header cut, drill the pocket holes and attach to the legs
4. Trace the shape of the headboard on the beadboard paneling and cut a slightly smaller shape so that the edges are not visible from the front. Nail it with the 1” finish nails and wood glue.
5. Cut out your footboard and attach it to the legs, easily attach the side rails to the header and the footer board.
6. Ensure the guard rails are smoothed out all around the corners using sandpaper. Attach them to the bed using ¼” bolts, 2” long with nuts and washers through predrilled ¼” bolt holes.
7. Attach the cleats with 2” screws and wood glue. Remember to predrill holes with the drill every 6-8” with the cleats on your work surface, then screw them in place.
8. Add the slats, ensure they are closely spaced to avoid foot slip through the wider spacing as the mattresses are so flimsy.
9. Finally fill all the holes with wood filler and keep applying additional coats of wood as needed; allow it to dry. Once the wood filler is completely dry, sand the entire project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum the sanded project and the entire working surface to remove sanding residue. Wipe the completed bed and the whole working are with a damp cloth.
10. Apply wood conditioner or color to your liking or to fit the toddler’s room. Allow it to completely dry to give a splendid toddler bed!
11. Put the mattress and the bedding.

The bed is ready for use and your toddler will be so proud of you for making their bed from home.
